Just returned from spending 5 days in association with Team NADIA volunteer group in a port town called Ishinomaki, one of the most hard hit areas devastated by the earthquake of 9.0M and Tsunami of almost 2 floors height. I went there with two friends from work at Thomson Reuters, Christine, Ikuko and two from outside work, Vladimir and Ashley.

At it peak during the Golden Week, there were about 60 volunteer workers helping those people who were badly affected by this “once in a thousand years” disaster. Most people lost their home completely and are now living in the refugee centre in school buildings. Some were lucky enough to see their home still standing but there are so much rubbles in the house and even after the rubbles are removed the wooden floors are rotten and underneath the floors there is 5 to 10 inches of mud and sea water creating such a bad rotten smell and right now it is un-inhabitable.
There is so much work needed to be done yet there is not enough volunteer worker. On day one the Team was helping a family of three generations – the grandma, the mother and the grand daughter – the mother passed away with the Tsunami, leaving just the elderly grandma and the young grand daughter. Both were helpless. On the next day, the Team helped another family of three generations – the grandma, the mother and the grand son, no father. From April 1, this year, the grand son should now be in his first year of secondary school, because people use the school as shelter he cannot attend school.

この度、GWの連休を利用して石巻で5日間のボランティアをしてまいりました。 石巻はM9.0の地震の被害と、津波の被害が最も深刻な地域の一つで、津波の高さは2階部分にまで達するほどでした。 私はトムソン・ロイターの2人の友人、クリスティーンと郁子、および社外からブラジミールとアシュリーの計5人で石巻にボランティアをしに行きました。

所属したボランティア団体“NADIA”ではGW中のピーク時には60人ほどが“千年に一度の大災害”に見舞われた人々を助けるため、ボランティアに従事しました。 NADIAは石巻市内にある湊小学校を拠点に活動をしており、この地域ではほどんどの住民が家を失い、現在は学校などの避難所での生活を強いられています。
一部の人は幸運にも家が津波で流されずにすみましたが、津波で流されてきたがれきが家じゅうに散乱している状況です。 仮にがれきを撤去することができたとしても腐った床板の下には汚泥やヘドロが10-20ｃｍほど山積しおり、また海水を含んだ汚泥やヘドロは2か月たった後も強烈な悪臭を放っているため、人が居住できる状態ではありません。
現地ではやるべきこと、片づけることが山ほどあります。しかし、ボランティアの数が足りていないのが現状です。
先日は祖母、母、孫娘の3世代の家族が同居する家を片付けました。母親は今回の津波で命を落とし、力のないお年を召した祖母と10代前半の孫娘だけが生き残りました。 また翌日は別の3世代が同居する家族を助けました。祖母、母、孫息子がいますが、父親はおりません。今年の4月1日より孫息子は中学に入学する予定でしたが、学校が避難所として利用されているため、学校が再開できずにいます。
